Date: March 2nd & 3rd
Location: Marmot Basin, Jasper, AB hosted by North Zone Clubs
Sunridge Alpine Ski Team participated in the 40th anniversary of the North Zone Ski Clubs’ JJOs. The event included our Nancy Greene Ski League athletes in age categories: U6 (4&5 years old), U9 (6-8 years old), & U12 (9-11).
Saturday, March 2nd races included U6 athletes participated in 4 fun runs on Schoolhouse. Both U9s & U12s was the Best of two runs. U9s competing in 2 Giant Slalom runs no Lower Dromedary while the U12s raced their 2 runs on Upper Dromedary.
The fun didn’t stop there. Saturday nights were made for dance parties. The ROC hosted the first ever JJO Hombre Dance Party at the Jasper Recreation Center. We saw our kids bust some sick moves, catch some door prizes as well as do a pretty mean wall lean (and some dad’s too).
Sunday, March 3rd all athletes participated in 1 timed run called the JJO Shootout. This timed run was an obstacle multi discipline on Dromedary. The U6 athletes started at Slow Poke Crossing, U9 started at Top of Tree Island, and the U12s start was Upper Dromedary. All athletes raced across the same finish line at Lower Dromedary.
The JJO Shootout was an exciting race for both the athletes, but the volunteers and spectators. We can still hear the cow bells riding up the chair along the race run.
Besides all the official race details our team bonded. Friendships were strengthened, limits were pushed, coaches challenged each other and our athletes.
Sunridge Ski Team hosted the 2019 Sunridge Ski Cross Challenge which included races from both the FIS Ski Cross Series and Western Ski Cross Series presented by Alpine Canada Alpin and Alberta Alpine Ski Association. This 3-day race event was the first stop in the Western Ski Cross Series with athletes in categories U14, U16 Open & FIS with athletes training on Friday, January 11 followed by races on Jan. 13 & 14.
Training and time qualifications ran smoothly on Friday and mother nature was kind to all athletes, course crew, volunteers and spectators. Friday night Sunridge Ski Team hosted its annual River X Rush banquet at the Clarion Hotel in Sherwood Park. Canada Ski Cross Development team and Alberta Ski Cross team members participated in the bib presentation based on the successful qualifications earlier in the day.
Saturday’s race series saw anxious competitors and lined up spectators in high spirits to kick off the first race in the series. Athletes from both the FIS Series and Western Series training on course. Both Race 1 & 2 for the FIS series were run on Saturday as well as Race 1 in the Western Series.
Sunday’s Race 2 concluded with another fantastic blue bird weather with some amazing spectator entertainment.
The second annual RiverX Golf Classic was a great success with over 80 golfers taking part in a great day of competition and fun. This even is the premier summer fundraiser for Sunridge Ski Club and Alberta FIS North. The proceeds from this even will provide great ski racing opportunities for youth in the capital region, thanks to all of our great sponsors!

December 9-10 saw our U12 PACE and U14-19 racers take to the slopes of Marmot Basin for some hardcore race training. Athletes trained on the challenging practice course set by their coaches on Upper Dromedary and Porteous Way
What a great start to the 17/16 season! Athletes were ready to start working hard and so were their parents as we offered a parent information session in our brand new clubhouse.
With early snow in the mountains our athletes headed out for an early full club camp at Sunshine Village to get some early training in. A great time was had by all and this early training means a great start for Sunridge racers!
