Alpine Ski Racing is a very physically demanding sport that requires the athletes to be in strong physical condition to preform safely and achieve their goals. The twists turns and speeds the kids encounter are far different from other sports, and every run down the slopes challenges the kids with centrifugal forces, rotational forces, uneven terrain and airtime. Very challenging indeed, and lots of fun!!
The Sunridge Ski Team dryland program is a mixture of agility, balance, and ski racing specific muscle strengthening that focuses on preparing the athletes for the challenges ahead. We want to train the kids to be better athletes first, then simulate as close as possible the specific forces the kids will encounter on snow.
This season our program has moved away from the school venues that were used in the past, to the gym at the church in Sherwood Park and a rock climbing gym in south edmonton.
The weekday focus at the gym will be a mixture of circuit training, aerobic and anaerobic condition with a strong emphasis on core development, and closed chain body strengthening. Games like soccer and basketball will also be included. We will also be doing some Martial Arts!
The Saturday venue is the vertically inclined rock climbing center. This gives us active recovery from the weekday workouts and will increase the much needed flexibility in the athletes. This also gives us a good mixture of hard work and fun activities.
It is highly encouraged for the athletes to do aerobic work in between dryland sessions and this work should continue throughout the entire season. A very simple 30 run, or 45 minute bike ride is all that is required, and will do wonders for recovery, strength and health through the entire season.
The athletes that are strong right to the end of the season are those that have developed the positive attitude and motivation, to continue to keep their fitness level up, and they stand out when the finals come around.
The coaches will be different combinations of, but not at all times:
Steve, Dan, Bobbie, Cindy and Cory.
Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Program Director
